Finding the Best Tactical Training
Don’t get shorted on your tactical abilities
Tactical training is something that is becoming more and more popular amongst all different groups of people. Nowadays, you are seeing law enforcement such as S.W.A.T and other agencies contract third party companies that consist of highly experienced individuals to teach their teams the fundamentals of different tactical scenarios such as close quarters combat or long range training. Not to mention, you see more and more civilians signing up for tactical training courses so that they can be prepared for whatever the world will throw at them. Now, you will see many different groups claiming to be experts in the tactical community, but they turn out to be not as good as they say. That being said, how can you find the best tactical training?
It is no secret that it can mean life or death when it comes to real life scenarios that you may be involved in and you want to be prepared for. That being said, tactical training is a very niche market and the skill level and experience of the instructors is absolutely crucial. What exactly should you be looking for when it comes to tactical training?
We have broken down what to look for when you are scouting out a new training course to enroll yourself in, so let’s take a look.
What to Look For in Tactical Training Groups
There are a lot of different aspects of training groups when it comes to tactical fluency, and you don’t want to waste your time or money when enrolling in a course.
Experience
The experience of tactical instructors is absolutely crucial, especially if you have never taken a course like this before. For example, if you are looking for tactical trainers to teach your law enforcement officers how to clear rooms, you don’t want a training group that has never cleared rooms, but that’s a no brainer. When it comes to finding guys that have good experience, typically the website of a tactical training group will have an “about us” section that describes what each of their instructors did, what they specialize in, and it gives good insight as to why they are qualified to teach you how to execute these crucial skills.
Finding a group of instructors that are former or current special forces can be a good thing to look for, as special forces tactics are top notch and can really provide you with some solid knowledge. Now the instructors don’t have to be pulled right from Seal Team 6, but a background in some sort of special forces whether that be Army Rangers, Green Berets, Navy Seals, or something along those lines, is usually a good sign of a quality tactical trainer.
How Fit Are the Instructors?
The saying goes “don’t judge a book by its cover”, and that stands true for a good amount of scenarios in life, but when it comes to finding tactical training near me, you want a group of instructors that are in decent shape. Garand Thumb said it best, “if you’re not fit, you’ll die”. That being said, fitness is one of the most crucial aspects of survival situations.
Imagine you are trying to practice clearing rooms, and your instructor is completely out of breath by the time they are lining up to breach the door. Not only is that bad for them, but it is bad for your team. If you or one of your operators is so out of shape that breathing is an issue when trying to carry out operations, then you are doomed. Now, these are relatively high-stress environments so it is not expected that you are holding your breath the entire time, but being morbidly obese to the point where a plate carrier barely fits and breathing cannot be reasonably controlled, that is a problem.
What Type of Tactical Courses are Offered?
This is a big part of tactical training, what do the instructors offer? There are a wide variety of different courses that will cover different scenarios, such as long range training or night vision courses or close quarters. Different courses will allow you to train with different pieces of your gear, and become fluent in different aspects of tactical.
Price
The best things in life unfortunately are not free, and tactical training happens to be one of the best things in life, so it is not free. While you do not want to absolutely break the bank and drain your departmental or personal funds when it comes to signing up for tactical courses, you also do not want to go with the cheapest options.
Do They Travel?
There is nothing wrong with local tactical training options, but if you are able to fill a course with attendees and really want one specific group to train you, will they come to you? Or will you have to get up and leave your city or state to go to them?
Do not expect a tactical trainer to fly across the country to train you alone, that would be overly nice of them, but if you can fill one of their courses with attendees and have the land to do the course, will they travel to your area?

All of that being said, what is the best group of people to train you tactically?
